BMA 21st Birthday Party Bushido Martial Arts was officially twenty one years in existence on Saturday 27th 2008 June when the club opened its doors for the first time in the initial club in Leixlip. The organisation decided to celebrate this significant milestone in its history by hosting an international event. On the night people were given an insight in the system style and lives of Bushido Martial Arts in Ireland. The first demonstration was by BMA Cork, with the students showing the capacity audience of four hundred people, some of the self defence wrist locks, restraints and take downs incorporated in to the syllabus at a senior stage. BMA Clondalkin, demonstrated a fundamental part of the syllabus, focus pad work, prioritising the FAST regime which is fundamental for effective, structured and practical development BMA Leixlip, went through advanced kicking drills, advanced focus pad work incorporation hand foot and spinning combinations and culminated in a one minute sparring demonstration of two five year olds, one being the Son of the Chief instructor of BMA in Ireland Roy Baker (Jun). I t was exciting and encouraging to see these tow young boys, having fun while sparring and showing skill and technique that defies their age in a safe and fully controlled environment were the priority is participation and fun and now winning. During the night a number of prestige matches where held accompanied with a number of AKAI irish national title fight offs.
First fight of the night was Luke Hennesy from, Carbury MA v Peter Carr from Combat Martial Arts, this was two cadets, it was a great fight but young Carr had a height advantage on his opponent and utilised this to take the win. Another great fight was Semi Ashley St Mart Spartans v Glen Rafferty, Combat Martial Arts. This was a close match all the way through with Ashley slightly edging ahead in the final round to take the win. The event drew friends of the organisation from around the world. Steve and Enid Winsper the parents of the extremely talented Winsper brothers and respected martial Artists. Tony and Jacey Chasmann, longtime
friends of the orginisation for many years. Tom and Christine Hibbert from AMA
and Jason Tankson from USA.
The final bout of the night was between one of Irelands most talented fighters, Mark Mc Dermott against the equally talented Jason Tankson from USA, this was a international prestige match, with lots of attitude and excitement entwined within it. Tankson with his gravity defying kicking ability and Mc Dermott with his clinical and world leading reverse punch was always going to be exciting for everybody to watch. Round one and two saw both fighters give no quarter, each round was extremely close, with nether fighter giving more than a two point spread. In round three Tankson caught Mc Dermott with two body kicks, which brought Mc Dermott in to a catch up situation, which does not suit his style of fighting. Tankson deservedly took the win.
On the night several awards were presented to people who had a significant contribution to the BMA schools in the last 21 years and support the organisation and its instructors. Awards where also presented to people who had in the opinion of BMA contributed to the development of martial Arts in Ireland. Some of the selected recipients where. Brendan Dowling and Birgid Ruane who received a standing applaus from all present. Winsper Family, Cashmann Family, Liam Mc Conelogue, Paul Coffey, Liam Whelan, Nico Duffy, Jimmy Upton, Liam Moggin from NCTC, Paul Condron, Tallaght martial arts but to mention a few.
The awards were quite unique, they where had crafted engraved glass awards, with a fitting inscription which read. It is worth reflecting briefly over the last twenty one years, BMA has been without question the most competitively successful kickboxing orginisation in Ireland, over the years it has one more major titles than any other orginisation ever. With the likes of, Nicola Corbett, Ilija Salerno, Darragh Geoghegan, Elaine Small, Colin O Shaughnassey, Craig o Shaugnassey, Lavina Cormack, Philip Baker, Ivan Casey, Michael Mc Cann and the chief instructor of the organisation Roy Baker. All winning World, European and professional kickboxing titles. The parent club in Leixlip has awarded 78 black belts in the twenty one years, this is no small feat, when you realize the average time to grade as a black belt is 8 years. Many of the black belts from the past attended the night and made a presentation to the chief instructor, Roy baker, thanking him for his dedication and support to the sport of Kickboxing in Ireland. The organisation now boasts clubs in, Dublin City, Lucan, Leixlip, Celbridge, Clondalkin, Maynooth, UCD, Blanchards Town Tech, Cork City, Donnybrook, CIT, Mayfield and with clubs about to open in Newry, things are looking good for this dynamic and successful organisation.
